Behind the Music

Twelve tracks comprising the album tell the story of an average person living in the «developed» part of the world today. Positioning itself as free and initiative, does the society really provide those values for its members? Are we — all of us (or at least most, — no, at least half of us) — truly free? Do we have any control on our lives, on our minds, on the things we value? Can we say that our society allows us to fulfill all the creative dreams nascent in our minds on different stages of our lives? Day after day, do we really come up with any attempts of making our world better? Do we ever think (or have time to think) about something more than just leading our life in the habitual manner?

The protagonist — let's call him London — starts as a pure child, full of dreams and confident about the purity and perfection of the world surrounding him.

1. A Man and an Orchestra (prologue)

This lightweight composition opens the album. Delicate, calm and tender, accompanied by countryside sounds on the background, it uncovers the purity of mind of a man standing before the road he has to pass over through his life. His future — just like his mind — has no limits, and his life sheet is blank.

2. Dreamy

A romantic style track that expresses a vision of an open-eyed child, who is capable of seeing a miracle in every basic thing. Little London is full of love to the world he lives in and full of dreams.

3. In the Rye

Childish dreams of world-wide peace and welfare are eventually substituted by pragmatic ideals planted by the parents. Honour and high position in the society become prevalent dreams of the adolescent; all the life appears to him as a competition where he must be a winner.

4. Farewell I

The song depicts the first serious breach of relations. Led by tempting career opportunities, London moves to the city, leaving his parents' home and parting with the girlfriend. Neither seems to be too frustrating to him, as phantoms of his new victories are looming on the horizon. The working title of this track was «20»

5. Upstairs? Upstairs!

For next several years, London works tirelessly building his career. His working day lasts from early morning till late night. His efforts are observed and rewarded by his management, so he conquers one career peak after another.

6. Gala

A fleeting reminiscence of the girlfriend he used to date with in his youth. London is surprised finding himself... missing her?

7. Machine

No time for sentiments. Competitors are breathing in the back, production is weeks behind the schedule, unions raise new salary and working conditions demands. Whoever calls, I'm busy.

8. Farewell II

Unable to bear the life of a housewife, going off to bed while her husband's still at work, and waking up while he's already at work, London's wife decides to file for divorce and moves out, taking kids with her. The second serious breach of personal relations in London's life. The working title of this track was “40”.

9. Lord of the Void

For the first time in his life, London stops and finds himself absolutely alone. Suddenly he realizes that all the things he considered important are of no value for him. He is missing his wife and kids. He is missing his parents. He is missing his first girlfriend and feels extremely guilty.

10. Runaway

Right time to take down the suit, throw away a bunch of mobile phones and dash expensive Swiss watches in the litter bin. Right time to burn the road, pursuing the life that is rapidly running away, and escaping from mechanical jaws that have almost shut, leaving no chance to get out. Be no one — but be free.

12. A Man and an Orchestra (epilogue)

The final track. Sharing the general motive with the opening track, this composition differs drastically from the former in the sense of arrangement, which is much richer and tougher than that of the first track. While the prologue depicts a man as a «blank sheet», the epilogue rather shows him as a complete drawing that reflects every single stroke of the life he led.

A spectacular story that I'm hardly refraining from referring to as colourful — if only music had colours. An incredible pleasure to listen to.
